Horton USAF (Ret.) Brigadier General John Coleman Horton USAF (Ret.) died Saturday, September 29, 2001, in Austin at the age of 96. Born September 13, 1905, in Tallahassee, Florida, to the Reverend John Coleman Horton and Ellen Hardin Horton. Jack was the second of four children. His siblings, Marguerite Dippert, Cyril Horton and James Horton have all predeceased him. He graduated from Laramie High School in Wyoming and was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he graduated in the class of 1929.

After graduation, he pursued his lifelong dream of being a pilot and entered the Army Air Corp. This began a 32 career in the military as a pilot, flight instructor, Commanding Officer and Commandant, finishing his career in the Office of the Secretary ofthe Air Force. Jack graduated from Primary and Advanced Flying School, Army Navy Staff College and the Imperial Defense College, London England. He received the Legion of Merit, ACM, and the Award of Cloud Banner (Chinese). Jack was an aviation pioneer, learning to fly in open co*ckpit biplanes, all the way to jet aircraft.

Until retirement in 1959, Jack and his family returned to his wife's home in Austin, Texas. There he enrolled at the University of Texas and studied business management. He became a director of the Austin National Bank, an investor, and community volunteer. His contributions to the community include the Founding Lions Club of Austin, The Austin Community Foundation, Troop 5 Boy Scouts of America and Child and Family Service Organization. Jack is survived by his sons, Wilmont Roberdeau Horton and John Coleman Horton III and wife, Nancy McCray Horton; his grandsons, John Coleman Horton IV, and Perry McCray Horton.

He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Virginia Wilmot Roberdeau Horton. Jack loved his family, his friends from around the world, and the adventure of life. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. Always a gentleman until his last day, he has touched the lives of many. I Duty, Honor, Country.

Worth, Texas, to George and Ollie Prim Nicks on May 1, 1924. Bob was a dedicated member of the United States Marine serving his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946.

After his military duty, Bob attended Texas Tech University and entered the banking business in 1949, During his successful career in banking, Bob advanced to become President of Citizens State Bank in Springer, New Mexico, in 1962. Additionally, he served six years on both the Board of Educational Finance and the New Mexico State Police Board. He was also President of the New Mexico Bankers Association in 1976-77. Other organizations Bob was active in included serving as member of the American Bankers Association for five years and membership in the New Mexico Amigos. Bob returned to Texas and from 1986 to 1996 served as President of Memphis State Bank before retiring from the industry.

After retirement, Bob moved to Austin to be closer to his family. One not to work, Bob took a part time job as a clerk with the Liquor Stop, while working there, he made many friends with loyal customers and area business owners. One of Bob's lifetime passions was the game of golf. As an avid golfer, he played many challenging courses and was proud of achieving a hole-in-one while playing at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock. Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Taylor Nicks of Austin; daughters, Nancy Bouffard and husband, Rod, of Houston, and Linda Roberts, of Austin; sisters, Mary Louise McCammon, of Dallas, and Dorothy Rose Wheeless of Euless; brother, Jerry Nicks and wife, Brenda, of Vicksburg, Mississippi; along with two granddaughters, two grandsons, three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She married Frank E. Pease on May 14, 1928, and moved to Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years; her parents; four sisters; and two brothers.
