What's the story of Les Misérables?

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, this isthe story of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his quest for redemption.

Having served 17 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving niece, a kindly Bishop inspires Valjean to begin a new life. Breaking parole, Valjean is hunted for decadesby the ruthless policeman Javert.

When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.
