A GLOBAL FIRST IN HEALTH CARE! Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center has become the first organization in the world to earn HIMSS’s Community Care Outcomes Maturity Model (C-COMM) Stage 7 validation for using information and technology to enhance patient care.C-COMM Stage 7 is the highest level of accreditation awarded by HIMSS. This recognition signifies the full integration of well-known digital tools like MyChart that allows health information to be shared effectively between patients and their clinical teams, with others such as the Baptist Access app, which features interactive maps, “Find a Doctor” and “Parking Reminder” tools to help patients find where they parked and how to navigate to a specific location inside our health care facilities. The integration and optimization of these tools enhances patient engagement, experience, quality of care and safety and ultimately leads to improved patient outcomes.“Today, the majority of treatments, care and services take place outside the confines of hospitals or acute care settings,” said Bill Putnam, MD, FACS, medical director of Baptist MD Anderson. “Digital tools help patients navigate their health care journey and help us connect with them and meet them where they are. Last year we joined forces with Neuroendocrine Cancer UK (NCUK), patients, patient advocates, clinicians and industry representatives to develop the first care pathway for people with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) in England. Following on from the launch of the pathway at UK Parliament, we’re delighted to have received recognition from the Journal of Neuroendocrinology with the publication of a peer-reviewed paper that outlines the changes required to ensure people in England have access to optimal NENs care. Written by Jessica Hooper, Lucy Morgan, Nikie Jervis, Alia Munir, Catherine Bouvier Ellis and other members of the project’s expert advisory group, the new paper details how NHS England can use existing processes and infrastructure to improve the level of care people with NENs receive. Reviewers of the paper said: ‘This article makes a significant contribution to the field of neuroendocrinology and healthcare management. It offers a well-founded and actionable plan for addressing the urgent need for standardised care for patients with NENs. By focusing on evidence-based recommendations and the cost-effective deployment of healthcare resources, the authors present a compelling case for the adoption of the proposed care pathway.’ Neuroendocrine cancer is the tenth most prevalent cancer in England, and the same situation is mirrored across the world. The pathway identifies key barriers to care and highlights how these can be addressed. The playing field is uneven and Congress must protect patient costs. Dr. Buscema writes, “Studies show that cancer care costs up to 60% more in the hospital setting, driven by excessive fees and markups. In contrast, community-based practices offer lower overall costs, while providing financial support services to reduce mental distress and cost burdens for both patients and their caregivers.”“With these dramatic differences in reimbursem*nt, large hospitals and health systems are incentivized to buy up independent physician practices, put their name on the door, and charge higher rates for the same services. As a result, physicians are being driven out of private practice, making it more difficult for patients to find care outside of the hospital setting.”Consolidation ultimately hurts patients. Do your patients know how to define a "medical emergency" that requires Emergency Department (ED) use? This study on cancer patients revealed that most are not using telephone triage and are self referring to the ED when it may not be necessary. With value-based care models focusing on reduction of treatment that is not "high-value" care, understanding your patient panel's ED use patterns and adjusting your approach can help meet goals. The independent public guideline group Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care have assessed the evidence base for breast screening using the highest standards for modern evidence synthesis. Their draft no longer recommend women of any age to be screened for breast cancer. In stead, they recommend that each woman decides for herself after knowing the facts: the evidence for benefits and harms is very uncertain; if a benefit exists, it is likely much smaller than you think; and the harms are serious. The recommendation that citizens decide for themselves after understanding the uncertainty and benefit-harm balance aligns well with what modern heathcare already strive for in patient care: respect for autonomy and informed choice.Health authorities gain credibility by openly acknowledging gaps and limitations in our knowledge. Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is characterised by high rates of recurrence and progression, requiring substantial healthcare resources. In Latin America, the incidence of NMIBC is set to increase due to an aging population and lifestyle changes. To better understand the current challenges for NMIBC treaters and patients, a mixed-methods approach was leveraged combining secondary research with qualitative interviews from healthcare providers in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Argentina. Our analysis found that significant challenges persist across the region, particularly due toBacillusCalmette-Guérin shortages, inconsistent adherence to clinical guidelines and significant socioeconomic disparities for patients accessing healthcare services. Addressing these challenges requires improved patient advocacy, strategic use of clinical trials and better resource distribution to enhance NMIBC management across Latin America.

A report from Johns Hopkins Medicine estimates that 795,000 Americans suffer serious harm from diagnostic error annually. The "Big Three": vascular events, infections and cancers account for 75% of the serious harms. 15 diseases account for 50.7% of the total serious harms and 5 conditions causing the most frequent serious harms account for 38.7% of total serious harms: stroke, sepsis, pneumonia, venous thromboembolism and lung cancer. We are excited to share the results of a groundbreaking comparative effectiveness trial conducted by leading experts at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The study, presented at the 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting was co-authored by Dr. Vicki Jackson, Dr. Areej El-Jawahri (co-chairs of Tuesday Health’s Clinical Advisory Board), and Dr. Mihir M. Kamdar, MD (Head of Clinical Delivery at Tuesday Health) demonstrates that early palliative care delivered via telehealth is as effective as in-person care for patients with advanced lung cancer.
